With a population that is nearly 90% Roman Catholic, the burden to reach these dear neighbors to the south with the truth of the Gospel of Christ burned in the hearts of a group of believers from Sacramento, California. • PETITIONERS WANT MARY SEATED BESIDE CHRIST: Group asks pope to elevate her from being an adviser to being a co-redeemer
  San Diego Union-Tribune - Friday, January 5, 2001 (New York Times News Service) - If [Mark Miravalle]'s campaign succeeds and [John Paul II] proclaims the Virgin Mary as a co-redeemer, she would be a vastly more powerful figure, something close to a fourth member of the Holy Trinity and the primary female face through which Christians experience the divine.   THORNTON, CA, OCT. 15, 2000 - In the "Catholic nations" of the world, such as Mexico, Guatamala, Cuba, Philippines, and many others, veneration to Mary is carried on with a fervant devotion, often celebrating with parades, carrying statues of the virgin through the streets of the cities, with participants often demonstrating their worthiness and carrying out penance by floggings and by walking the parade route barefooted. Once upon a time, Americans would have looked upon such a parade of ardent devotion and chantings in honor of statues of Mary as something that could only take place on the news and in a foreign country. But not so today. . .A small band of workers was there to distribute the booklet, Is the Virgin Mary Dead or Alive? to the crowds venerating statues of Mary in Thornton, California. • ALL CONTINENTS PARTICIPATE IN WORLD ROSARY
  VATICAN CITY, OCT. 8, 2000 (ZENIT.org)- In the presence of the statue of the Virgin of Fatima, representatives from 150 countries, along with 1,500 bishops, joined the Pope in a special World Rosary in St. Peter's Square.

  Representatives from the five continents took turns leading the five Glorious Mysteries on Saturday.

  Representing Europe was Sister Lucia dos Santos, 93, the last survivor the three young shepherds who saw the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1917. Sister Lucia prayed from her Carmelite convent in Coimbra, Portugal, via satellite transmission.

  In his brief address at the end of the ceremony, the Holy Father said of the Blessed Virgin: "There has been no century or people to whom she has not made her presence known, bringing light, hope and consolation to the faithful, especially to little ones and the poorest." Full Story ->>

• POPE SAYS JUBILEE IS OCCASION TO REDISCOVER MARY
  VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 24, 2000 (ZENIT.org)- On a day marking two Marian events, John Paul said, "The Jubilee of the Son is also the Jubilee of the Mother."

  The events were the end of an international congress dedicated to Mary, and the Jubilee of Marian Shrines around the world.

• RESIDENTS IN SOUTHERN EGYPT REPORT SEEING VIRGIN MARY
  C A I R O, Egypt, Sept. 11 — Every night Marcelle Maurice comes to Saint Mark’s church in the little town of Assiut, Egypt, to stand outside and watch the sky. She says she sees an apparition of the Virgin Mary every night.

• HUMAN LIFE INTERNATIONAL CONSECRATION TO MARY MEDIATRIX
  June 30, 2000-Human Life International's president, Father Richard Welch, CSSR, JCD, the world's largest pro-life, pro-faith, pro-family apostolate, announced to the news media that the organization intended to consecrate themselves and their mission to Mary Immaculate and Mediatrix of all Graces. This major event in the history of the organization took place on Friday, June 30, 2000. • POPE CONSECRATES THIRD MILLENNIUM TO OUR LADY
  VATICAN CITY, MAR 22 (ZENIT.org)- On October 8 John Paul II will entrust the Third Millennium to Our Lady of Fatima. The news was announced by Archbishop Crescenzio Sepe, secretary general of the Vatican Jubilee Committee. The statue of the Blessed Virgin will be brought from Portugal to Rome for the occasion.
